A FEW DAYS AGO, GMA Network announced one of its prime time offering for 2017. It is the romantic comedy series ‘Meant To Be‘ with young Kapuso actress Barbie Forteza as the leading lady, and to our surprise, she is to be joined by not just one or two but four leading men.
But as we are to check on whether Barbie deserves to have those four men, we are drawn to the path the network is gearing toward with this new series. By the look of it, ‘Meant To Be’ would seem to follow the formula seen in the hit Asian series ‘Meteor Garden’ and ‘Boys Over Flowers’ that took the whole Asia by storm, including of course, the Philippines.
Back in 2001, Taiwanese drama series ‘Meteor Garden‘ made actress Barbie Hsu an Asian superstar and F4’s Jerry Yan, Vic Zhou, Vanness Wu and Ken Chu a favorite boyband in the whole Asia. Based on Japanese shōjo manga series, ‘Boys Over Flowers’ written by Yoko Kamio, ‘Meteor Garden’ even had a second season that strengthened the popularity of the Taiwanese actors. In 2005, the same story was adapted in Japan with ‘Hana Yori Dango’ followed by ‘Hana Yori Dango Returns’ two years later. Both became a hit as well.
While the popularity of the first ‘Meteor Garden’ has marked in the hearts of most Asians, it was in 2009 that we were again taken by storm by the hit series ‘Boys Over Flowers‘ when it was released by South Korean television and this time with Lee Min-ho, who has became a superstar instantly. Lee Min Ho was joined by Ku Hye-sun, Kim Hyun-joong (of SS501), Kim Bum, Kim Joon (of T-Max) and Kim So-eun.
Though ‘Meant To Be‘ is not an exact adaptation of ‘Boys Over Flowers’, the Filipino versions casting seem to be traversing the same path and to be using the same formula with Forteza at the center. It is too early to say that ‘Meant To Be’ is an exact copy of ‘Boys Over Flowers’ for that would jeopardize the series and with the recent hullaballoos on a lot of Kapuso series (read: Arrow) they don’t want that to happen. However, it will definitely put to test whether the Filipino viewers are once again ready for yet another four-boys-one-lady-series formula. In the recent past, we were only given with series of not more than two conflicting parties trapped in a love triangle, sometimes, two ways. There’s no need to panic though as we just need to wait on what unique flavor this series would offer us, passionate Pinoy viewers.
In the Filipino series, Forteza is joined by GMA Network homegrown talents Ken Chan and Jak Roberto, former ABS-CBN talent Ivan Dorschner (Pinoy Big Brother), and newcomer Addy Raj. These four hunks will play characters of different personalities as they try to woo the lady in Barbie. Are you guys excited? Let us know in the comments.
